BRIEF HISTORY OF THE JOINT MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE
MAY 1990
Johnstone Strait Killer Whale Committee appointed. The interagency body was co-chaired by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and BC Parks, with the goal of examining the impacts of human activities on killer whales in the Robson Bight (Michael Bigg) Ecological Reserve and assessing impacts of whale watching in Johnstone Strait.
MAY 1991
Johnstone Strait Killer Whale Committee released a background report outlining the major issues and providing a series of options for public review and comment.
JUNE 1991
Public meetings and open houses are held in Port McNeill, Campbell River, Victoria, and Vancouver.
JUNE 1992
A final report of recommendations is released. Recomendations addressing education, legislation, commercial fishing, land access, and whale watching were put forward. One key recommendation was a call for a management committee to implement the recommdations of the final report.
