Join our team! We are hiring an Interpreter for the 2024 season! We have one full-time (40 hours/week) position available for the period of May 24, 2024 to August 31, 2024.

Background

The Whale Interpretive Centre (WIC) is a land-based education centre that is home to the largest public collection of marine mammal skeletons in British Columbia. The WIC is operated by a registered charitable society, the Johnstone Strait Killer Whale Interpretive Centre Society. The mandate is promoting public awareness of marine mammal conservation. The WIC is located in Telegraph Cove, northern Vancouver Island, BC. The Johnstone Strait/Blackfish Sound Archipelago is an ecologically important feeding area for many marine mammals including killer whales and humpback whales. Due to its prime location and world-renown collection, the WIC draws thousands of visitors every summer.


Job Description

The main goal for the Interpreter is to present educational information (one on one and structured presentations) to visitors from different backgrounds around the world. Interpreters also are responsible to maintain the WIC by cleaning the exhibits, developing further displays and organizing inventory. Some office duties are also required such as reception/admission and gift shop purchases. 


Qualifications

  • Passion for the marine environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Team player
  • Knowledge of marine mammal biology is preferred but not required as training is available.
  • Must be willing to live and work in a remote environment (Northern Vancouver Island) and have their own transportation and accommodation.
