The Whale Interpretive Centre will be open to the public starting on Saturday, August 1, 2026.
While the inside of the WIC is still undergoing improvements and isn't quite finished, the WIC staff is here to greet visitors and share information about the marine mammals of our area and the spirit of the WIC.

Admission:
Admission to the Whale Interpretive Centre will be by donation for the 2026 season. Donations help to support critical interior improvements, articulate skeletons, and creating new exhibits. Thank you for supporting the Whale Interpretive Centre's education and conservation efforts.
Guided Tours and Presentations:
Guided tours of the collection or presentations on marine mammals are offered throughout the season. Tours and presentations can be scheduled in advance by calling 250-949-1143. Tours and presentations are by donation; $8.00 per person is suggested.
The Whale Interpretive Centre is located on the traditional and unceded Territories of the Kwakwa’la Speaking Peoples.
To learn more about the cultural heritage of the Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw, the

Where is the WIC located?
The Whale Interpretive Centre (WIC) is located in Telegraph Cove on Northern Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Telegraph Cove is a very picturesque, historical boardwalk community.
The WIC is found at the end of the Telegraph Cove boardwalk. Its entrance faces the beautiful Johnstone Strait.
Did anything survive the fire?
Sadly, everything within the Whale Interpretive Centre was destroyed in the fire.
Despite the devastating loss, a handful of items were off-site at the time of the fire. This includes three skeletons - a Dall's porpoise, a Risso's dolphin, and the only ever recorded pygmy sperm whale in BC.
The WIC has also been overwhelmed by the support of its community and has had several offers of other skeletons and specimens to replace what was lost. The current collection on display at the WIC represents tremondous support from the community.
What is the WIC's anticipated re-opening date?
The WIC is re-opening to the public on Saturday, August 1, 2026. While the exterior of the building is finished, the interior is still undergoing improvements.
The WIC and the Board of Directors appreciate your patience as we navigate this chapter. The WIC anticipates that construction will be fully finished by summer 2027.
How do I get to Telegraph Cove?
Telegraph Cove is located on Northeastern Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. Telegraph Cove is 15 km from Highway 19 via the Beaver Cove Road.
Driving times via Highway 19 are approximately:
- 1 hour South of Port Hardy
- 20 minutes South of Port McNeill
- 2.5 hours North of Campbell River
- 4 hours North of Nanaimo
