The Whale Interpretive Centre is run by the Johnstone Strait Killer Whale Interpretive Centre Society (JSKWICS), a registered charitable organization with the CRA (registration number: 888216868RR0001). The JSKWICS was founded in 1993 and opened the Whale Interpretive Centre in 2002 as a venue to increase education and awareness of marine mammals and the threats facing their populations. A land-based interpretive centre with the forementioned objectives was one of the recommendations from the Johnstone Strait Killer Whale Committee, co-founded by BC Parks and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
